About the role

Please apply here: (https://apply.workable.com/gridware/j/0D54FE7D22/)

Gridware is on a mission to create a future without deadly wildfires. We’re a startup building hardware and software that monitors the power grid to prevent and detect faults that lead to wildfire ignition. (More about Gridware below).

To make that happen, we’re currently looking for a Data Scientist to join our growing team.

Why do we need you?

In this role you will have the potential to not only improve the efficiency of infrastructure, but to save lives.

Our product utilizes multimodal sensing to identify, predict and classify faults on the power grid that drive wildfire ignition. You would help us build and deploy machine learning models which synthesize input from our various sensor streams to detect and assess the risk of fault modes. Analytics will iteratively inform our hardware, firmware, and software design decisions as we continue to deploy and monitor our devices on the field.

Responsibilities

This is what you’ll be doing:

  • Analyzing & classifying data obtained from devices' sensor streams
  • Designing and executing experiments to characterize and test for fault detection in controlled environments
  • Regularly operating experiments at an outdoor test site to collect data, obeying strict safety protocols
  • Working alongside a full-stack team of hardware, firmware, and software engineers to inform design decisions and product optimization

Required Skills

To move forward in the application process you should have at least all of these:

Technical:

  • 2+ years of professional experience in a quantitative field
  • Strong fundamentals and advanced knowledge of probability & statistics, including stochastic processes and experimental design
  • Experience building and deploying machine learning models in the real world
  • Fluency in Python, including common data science libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, SciPy, PyTorch, etc.
  • Data processing and querying from Relational DBMS (SQL)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with open-ended problems from start to finish, including the development and maintenance of data analysis pipelines
  • Real world experience with experimental design

Non-technical:

  • Ability and willingness to (learn how to) operate electrical equipment at an outdoor test site while obeying strict safety protocols
  • Curiosity and adaptability, ability to learn and apply specific domain knowledge to generate hypotheses
  • Experience communicating data-driven insights to audiences of varying levels of technical sophistication

Bonus Skills

Your application will have a higher chance of standing out, if you have one (or more) of the following skills or experiences. If you, however, have all of the required skills but none of the bonus skills we still encourage you to apply.

  • Background in mechanics, electricity and / or magnetism
  • Experience working with time series data classification and / or prediction
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining relational databases (e.g. Postgres + TimescaleDB)
  • Experience with data augmentation techniques
  • Involvement or oversight in large-scale data collection efforts
  • Familiarity with cloud-based ML products

Application

Although we do not require candidates to submit a cover letter, candidates who wish to have their application stand out are invited to write a cover letter outlining one or all of the following things in a bullet-point format:

  • Where you have acquired the required skills
  • Which (if any) of the bonus skills you have and where you acquired them
  • Why you are interested in this role

Benefits

We offer competitive benefits that help employees to thrive and grow. These benefits include:

  • An attractive salary with bonus plan
  • Health insurance
  • Flexible working hours
  • Stock option plan

We are a mission-driven team passionate about saving lives and creating a future without wildfires.

Our Vision

Save Lives Everyday, Everywhere

Our Mission

Prevent catastrophic failures by building a highly adaptable platform capable of answering any question about critical infrastructure.

What we do

We provide a full-stack (hardware + firmware + software) solution for real-time monitoring of America's power distribution grid. Our low-cost hardware platforms are deployed to power poles, where they

  • detect and predict faults that lead to wildfire ignition or outages
  • expedite repairs during power outages

Gridware’s technology is designed to unlock essential values for other adjacent verticals. Our unique positioning allows us to solve some of the world’s most burning challenges - from helping policy makers make data-driven infrastructure decisions to helping farmers overcome micro-climate challenges. While others turn a blind eye to these aged and highly-regulated industries, we at Gridware believe it’s our duty to find win-for-all scenarios that lead to a prosperous future for coming generations.

Our investors

Gridware is a privately-held company with funding from major investors such as

  • True Ventures
  • Fifty Years
  • Y Combinator
