About the role

About us:

We're Tovala, a food-tech company completely reinventing home cooking to save consumers time. Through an innovative combination of hardware, software, and food, we give our customers a way to enjoy really good, good-for-you meals without sacrificing time to do whatever matters to them. We've amassed a loyal, rapidly growing following in just a few years, radically changing the day-to-day lives of people across the country and successfully creating a new model for the food industry. We're looking for great people to join our team of hard-working, food-loving nerds.

The Operations Tech team builds internal software solutions that enable our food operations team to scale efficiently while delivering 100% of our meals safely to our customers. Our software solutions solve a variety of challenging problems, and in turn, span a variety of technologies that include: React/Redux single page apps, Go and python backend API’s with SQL data stores, Retool UIs, Google sheets, Slack apps, and Lambda functions. As a Full-Stack engineer on the team, you will contribute to the development of any one of these mission critical software tools that help run our food operations across the country.

Location:

We have some flexibility on location. Ideally, we would love to find someone in proximity to one of our production facilities (Chicago, IL or West Valley City, UT) to see their work in action! However, working remotely is possible!

For this role, flexibility in your working hours and/or location is possible. Flexibility is a two-way commitment that takes teamwork, leadership, and trust. We recognize that flexible work arrangements – and remote work in particular – will be even more important to our team members and to the company as we work to meet our goals moving forward. Please note: each arrangement will be reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the individual as well as the team.

How you’ll spend your time at Tovala:

Collaborating with all members of the Food Operations team (chefs, non-software engineers, product owners, operations management, warehouse operators, and everyone in between) to deeply understand their pain points and build software to eliminate those pain points Pairing with your teammates on architecting, planning, and building intuitive end-to-end solutions that help get our food through every step of our operations process efficiently and safely. Some of the solutions we’ve built, or you may help build include: A recipe management and menu planning microservice to empower our R&D team to build recipes that fit within constraints from the operations, marketing, and finance teams An algorithm to optimize the scheduling of production activities (cooking, portioning, packing, etc) specific to each of our facilities given various inputs (the meals being prepared, the labor and equipment available, etc) Automated ingredient ordering reports that integrate with our warehouse management system Custom barcode scanning solutions built on Android based barcode scanners to reduce errors during our packout process Producing high quality code grounded in strong software engineering principles Helping to evolve our software solutions organically without over-engineering. Promoting progress over perfection Actively participating in our agile scrum process Participating in various software guilds to learn and share learnings across both front-end and back-end technologies Visiting our Production facilities, if you are located near one, to see your solutions being used first hand Requirements About you

You have 4+ years of experience developing production grade software across multiple technologies You have a strong understanding of software architecture and design principles and love applying them to any technology or language you work with You are comfortable building intuitive single page applications in React without help from a design or UX team. Bonus if you are familiar with Typescript You are comfortable building RESTful APIs and interacting with SQL databases. Bonus if you are familiar with Go, Python, PostgreSQL, and/or AWS You have strong communication and project management skills from collaborating with people across different teams and functional areas You are a champion for writing good tests and testable code You enjoy pair programming and thrive in an environment that prioritizes pair programming You emphasize functionality over aesthetics when working with internal customers You are very comfortable finding the balance between architecting the perfect solution and moving fast to prove out a solution. You can articulate and help advocate for both options when the time is right You are empathetic and a strong team player and enjoy working with engineers of all levels. You enjoy mentoring junior engineers You want to work in an environment that: takes a people-first approach, values humility, integrity, and ambition, and focuses on creating a culture that keeps people happy and challenged You love food, whether that means cooking it, eating it, frequently pressing your nose against deli windows, or lusting after soft-serve on Instagram. All fair game.
