About the role

One of Reach Labs’ recent major projects was to enable collaboration between multiple networked power transmitters to service high-power applications. This project required implementation of a low latency communication network between transmitters, and we are looking for a talented Network Engineer to join our engineering team to help make this network scalable and resilient. In this role, you will have a significant impact on the development and deployment of the network infrastructure that will help power the future of power distribution.

Technically, you will help develop a high quality networking infrastructure that enables communication between wireless power transmitters and that supports the topology and routing of Reach Labs’ meshed power networks. You will expand and improve the existing codebase and use intuition, experience, and theoretical knowledge to help implement an efficient and robust communication stack. This development will help expand the capability of wireless power networks for a broader and deeper range of applications.

You will be able to influence all parts of the wireless power system and interface with our hardware, firmware, and product teams to expand the capabilities of our system. Therefore, you should be a network specialist that is also capable of working across many layers of abstraction and open to understanding new technologies.

We're looking for an enthusiastic and driven person who’s excited by hard problems and collaborating with teammates to resolve them. Though you will have a high degree of independence over your own work, we believe no one succeeds alone and the best things are built collaboratively. We need a clear communicator with great interpersonal skills that can tackle challenging technological problems while thinking about robust software development practices and future maintainability.

This is a developing position in a fast-paced environment where you will have a great deal of agency over your work and influence over the direction of the product.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a fault-tolerant network architecture for the power distribution nodes that is highly responsive, low latency and scalable.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot all mesh topology and routing hardware and software
  • Design how the power distribution nodes will integrate with ground networks and other cloud based services.
  • Design and implement data collection and data pipelines to improve network reliability and operation tools (network telemetry, failure detection, alert generation, mitigation services, network visualization)
  • Analyze telemetry and test results, evaluate scale and performance, and identify bugs or shortcomings that require in-depth investigations
  • Work with engineers across the organization to resolve issues and improve performance

Qualities and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience with a BS/BE or greater in a technical field such as Computer Science or Physics
  • Experience with Unix/Linux development tools
  • Experience using Git or other version control tool
  • Familiarity with networking technology such as Ethernet, IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, traffic engineering, etc.
  • Experience with continuous integration, simulation software infrastructure, maintaining hardware test setups, etc.
  • A test-driven, analytical approach to debugging and problem solving
  • Experience building, testing, or working with real-time embedded systems
  • Excited by technical challenges; comfortable building a system from the ground up
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to work collaboratively within a close team setting

Bonus Skills

  • Experience with testing for performance and scale
  • Experience working on wireless networks
  • Experience working on software defined networking (SDN) and/or network function virtualization (NFV)
  • Knowledge of data structures and algorithms.
  • Background or experience in signal processing or data analysis.
  • Experience working at a start-up or with a small, intimate team.

Benefits

  • Flexible working hours
  • Unlimited, paid vacation policy
  • High degree of autonomy and work ownership with strong action-to-impact relationship
  • Dental, Vision, and Medical coverage, with HMO, PPO, HDHP options
  • 401k, HSA, FSA
  • Long-term Disability, Short-term Disability and Life insurance offerings
  • Hybrid work schedule

Reach Labs - Who We Are

Reach Labs is a pioneer in a new frontier of technology. Born out of MIT, incubated in YC, and developed in an "office space" that was once the oven of a cookie factory, we are a group of curious, passionate, and creative problem solvers, and we approach our work with vigor and humility.

Much has changed since our cookie factory days, but our core philosophies have remained. Decisions are made quickly, meetings and politics are kept to a minimum, and everyone here does high-visibility work that has considerable influence on our product and company. We have weekly team lunches, quarterly offsite company events, and often spend time together outside of work bicycling, rock climbing, playing music, and hosting happy hours.

We highly value diversity at our company - in not only professional capabilities and experience, but also in personal interests, schools of thought, musical tastes, and walks of life. We prioritize inclusivity, and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

Why you should join Reach Labs

We live in a world where “connected” no longer means attached to a wire. Reach Labs is introducing a new state of wireless power technology that cuts the cord and pulls us into an era no longer dependent on physical connections to power our lives and machines. Currently Reach’s long-range, collaborative system is transforming power transfer operations across industries to be more safe, effective, and flexible. Through this development we are building the utility to ultimately replace the aging electrical grid, and we’re interested in finding exceptional people to join us.
