About the role

Wefunder has funded over 900 startups and small businesses: anything and everything from flying cars or bionic limbs to neighborhood restaurants and indie movies. We grew 4x year over year and tripled the size of our team in 2021.

As our first full-time hire on the finance team, you’ll do a little bit of everything - from controller, to financial consultant to companies raising with us, to overseeing investor returns and taxes. If you like variety with a dash of chaos, this is the role for you.

Location: Wefunder HQ is in San Francisco. We will generally prefer candidates who live in the SF Bay Area or want to relocate.

Our dream candidate is a quick learner and is hungry to do more. You’re not afraid of ambiguity; you’ll define the scope of this role as you work in it. You’re someone who doesn’t just tolerate uncertainty, but thrives in it.

Experience in the finance and accounting world is important. And so is judgment - we’ll rely on you to make strategic decisions for the business, support our founders when they need it, and take on projects like managing investor returns and taxes. There are a lot of details to learn; we operate in a highly regulated environment, and you’ll need to learn the ins and outs of it quickly.

You’re the first full-time hire on the finance team. You’ll help define the scope of your role and contribute to the team in ways that are outside of the scope of a “normal” finance hire.

  • Oversee the flow of money through our platform. We facilitated over $250M in investments last year. You’ll help make sure the money ends up in the right place.
  • Manage Wefunder’s finances. Keep our house in order. Manage the flow of funds between our parent company and various operational entities in the US and EU.
  • Manage investor repayments and taxes. Tracking, distributions, and IRR calculations. 1099s and K-1s. You’ll help our post-funding team to build products and processes that support our investors after they’ve invested with us.
  • Support our founders. From advising on GAAP financial requirements to helping with tax questions, you’ll be a utility player, as long as it adds value.
  • Explain complicated security terms. Financing terms are difficult to understand, and it's our responsibility to help investors understand what it means for them and educate founders on their options.
  • Special projects. Some tasks don’t fit neatly under a job title. You’ll just get it done.

Finance or accounting experience is required, but we’re more concerned with your drive and hunger than your years in a job. We invest in potential. If you are a quick learner and super- motivated, the sky is the limit. Here are some skills we think are important:

  • Finance and accounting experience. CPA or CFA certification and at least 2 years of experience required. Experience doing it for a startup is a plus.
  • Organization and attention to detail. It's important that no balls get dropped when dealing with multiple projects at once.
  • Independent problem solver. We want someone who's able to tackle difficult problems on their own and proactively looks for new ways to improve Wefunder. In other words, you can just figure it out.
  • Strong people skills. You should have a talent for making people feel instantly comfortable, heard, and understood.
  • Prioritize efficiently. You'll be juggling a thousand things at once. Be able to recognize which tasks are most important and get those done.
  • Learn quickly. There are tons of details to learn; securities regulations are quite complex and things change fast around here. You must be able to absorb and retain a lot of facts quickly; we don't like answering the same question three times and it's up to you to seek out information if you need it.
  • Responsible & accountable. If you say you will do it, you do it.

  • Market-rate salaries and stock options.
  • Unlimited vacation days (mandatory 3 weeks off).
  • Medical, dental, & vision insurance.
  • 401K matching.
  • All-expense paid Wefunder vacation. We’ve taken three train trips across the country.
  • Apple equipment. Whatever you want.
  • Lots of free food and drinks.
  • Reimbursement for health and wellness, classes, and conferences.

This job is in-person and based out of the San Francisco office.

On May 16, 2016, it became legal for regular people to invest as little as $100 in startups and small businesses. Since then, we have become the largest equity crowdfunding platform. We've helped hundreds of startups and small businesses – including flying cars, space rockets, breweries, Hollywood studios, and potential Ebola cures – raise millions of dollars.

We're a Public Benefit Corporation with a mission to revitalize capitalism and keep the American dream alive. GDP growth is slowing. Wealth inequality is increasing. Entrepreneurship is dying across America; falling from 10.6% to 3.6% among those under 30 since 1989. We're reversing these trends by funding more deserving businesses across all of America, not solely tech startups in Silicon Valley.

Want to help? Join us! We're a team of founder types: enjoy autonomy, responsibility, the opportunity to learn, and no red tape. Just make it happen.

Why you should join Wefunder

We're the Robinhood for pre-IPO startups. We allow everyone to invest $100 in a startup they love.

Over the past five years, we've helped fund 826 startups with $362,349,253 – including flying cars, space rockets, breweries, Hollywood studios, and potential Ebola cures.

We’re now doubling the size of our team to handle the growth. Trying to keep up!

We’re also a public benefit corporation with a mission of saving the American Dream (https://wefunder.com/charter). Our aim is to sprinkle the Silicon Valley fairy dust across the rest of the country, which often don’t have the same opportunities we take for granted.
