Blythe Masters was recognized at the 2010 Pink Soirée fundraiser with the Pink Ribbon Individual Award for her extensive efforts fundraising on behalf of Komen for the Cure, while JPMorgan Chase received the Pink Ribbon Corporate Award.

“Blythe Masters has been an integral part of our board and our top individual Race fundraiser for five years,” said Komen Greater NYC CEO Dara Richardson-Heron, MD. “JPMorgan Chase has been a staunch supporter of our events since 1994, and its Race team has been #1 in fundraising for five years.”

She also spoke about Komen Greater NYC’s grant program and how it was helping to underwrite breast education, screening, treatment and support services for underserved women in the New York metropolitan area — a group whose numbers has increased due to the consequences of the economic crisis: layoffs and loss of health insurance.

“On behalf of the entire JPMorgan Chase organization, we are both humbled and honored to be recognized and to have had the great pleasure of partnering with Komen Greater NYC for the past 16 years,” said Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase Chairman and CEO. “I’m particularly proud of the hundreds of JPMorgan Chase employees who have supported Komen Greater NYC and its Race for the Cure, and would like to give a special thank you to Blythe Masters for championing this important work.”

Dimon further thanked Masters for her efforts, noting that “her leadership, enthusiasm and dedication have inspired many colleagues and friends to participate in this important cause. ”Like anything that Blythe takes on, her commitment is 100%,” he stated.

“Like everything that Komen Greater NYC does, the Pink Soiree event served as a beacon of help for today, and hope for tomorrow, “said Masters. “It was both inspiring and a lot of fun to attend. I am privileged to lead the board for such an important and involved group, and I am very moved by Komen Greater NYC’s on-going dedication to the community.”

“Blythe Masters, JPMorgan Chase’s Global Head of Currencies and Commodities and Chair of the Komen Greater New York City Board of Directors, raised an extraordinary $161,950 for the 2006 Komen New York City Race for the Cure®. She is not only the highest individual fundraiser for the New York City Race but also, potentially, the biggest fundraiser for Komen worldwide.

Masters’ involvement with Komen was triggered about five years ago by two things — one personal, the other professional. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the same time, Lori Hricik, currently JPMorgan Chase CEO/Treasury Services, was drumming up people for the company’s team and invited Masters to a recruitment breakfast. Masters found the experience moving and decided to get involved.

Fueled by her mother’s illness and the fact that breast cancer, unlike so many other diseases, has a viable chance for a cure, she committed herself to raising money for Komen. “I thought it was a cause worth dedicating myself to,” said Masters. “The disease is so pervasive. So many people have been affected by it either directly or indirectly, so they can truly relate to the need to get involved.”

When asked about her fundraising strategies, Masters replied, “This company is amazing. It’s committed to the community where it operates, its employees and its customers.”

JPMorgan Chase sees the challenge of fundraising for the Race in the same way its sees its business challenges. It organized a year-round steering committee made up of representatives of its six major commercial lines, where members create best practices to get the “biggest bang for the buck.”

Masters approached senior managers and convinced them to match employee donations dollar for dollar. In 2006, they committed matching funds totaling $100,000. The program will be continued for the 2007 Race. To keep employees enthusiastic about fundraising, JPMorgan Chase hosts a breakfast, information sessions, a casino night and more.

How can people forming a team be successful?

“It’s about not being bashful,” said Masters. “People are reticent to organize in the workplace, but it’s really beneficial for the organization — whether it’s a company, school or institution. It brings people together.”

Her final advice — “Be brave. Don’t be afraid to ask. Everyone’s been touched by breast cancer.”
